Birth tourism controversy heating up in Richmond

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A tax on foreign buyers in the real estate market may lead to some people trying to use loopholes to gain citizenship.

Kerry Starchuk decided to start the petition when she saw some suspicious activity near her home in Richmond.

There are more than 5,000 signatures already, but she’s not focused on the numbers. “I don’t think it is so much the numbers. I don’t care if I have 100,000 or I have the bare minimum I believe it is a subject that needs to be discussed.”

She says this could be happening in other parts of the country and it should stop. “I know that other countries have had challenges and they have actually changed their policies. We have never had a discussion on this and perhaps it’s time we do.”

The petition calls for the government to enact legislation which will fully eliminate birthright citizenship in Canada unless one of the parents of the child born in Canada is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
