Massive seawall renovation done, phase two upgrades pending

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – There couldn’t be a better time to go for a stroll in the park as the most-expensive renovation in the history of the Stanley Park seawall is now done!

It’s the first major renovation like this in a hundred years according to the Vancouver Park Board’s Stuart Mackinnon.

The most challenging part of the $4.5 million project was only being able to work during low tide.

“The big rocks that they need to take out, they remove, they number, they re-shape and bring them back. And they’re just finished the fill and we should be good for this winter,” says Mackinnon.

“This was the first major overhaul of the seawall since 101 years ago when it first began.”

He says this was just the first phase of the reno and there will need to be a second phase next year, pending the board’s approval.

“We want to make sure that the seawall is safe for everyone and that it lasts for as long as we can keep it there.”

The current renovation should hold for 50 to 75 years.
