Online cheddar challenge, not everyone is a fan

EDMONTON – Everyone loves babies and cheese, but put them together well that is a matter of taste according to one social media expert.

“I came across the cheese challenge last week on Reddit and I actually didn’t think anything of it,” said Adam Rozenhart. “To me, it was just a video of someone throwing a slice of American cheese on their kids’ face, so my initial thought was that’s hilarious.”

The first cheese challenge video was shared more than 160 thousand times, fast forward a few days and it has exploded with thousands of people gleefully turning their kids into cheddar heads.

“I think the reason that people do challenges like the cheese challenge or the ice bucket challenge is that it’s just really simple to make a video of something that will delight other people, I do think it’s catching on,” said Rozenhart. “I’m seeing a lot more people post that sort of thing online whether that’s good or not is really up to everyone else to decide.”

Not everyone can stomach the cheese challenge, some critics are calling it embarrassing or claiming it might even qualify as child cruelty.

“I love a prank as much as anybody, but I cannot get myself to throw cheese at my adorable, unsuspecting baby who has all the hope and trust in the world in me,” said Christine Teigen on Twitter.

Others are upping the ante though, focusing their cheese throwing on their furry friends or even family members.

“Internet challenges, I was going to say, unfortunately, will always be a thing, for better or worse just because these are the trends online,” he said. “It’s easy for people to participate in and it makes them feel like they are part of a larger community.”

Of course, this seemly random trend will likely fade from memory like other bizarre fads like the tide pod challenge, but it likely won’t be long before someone else thinks of a cheese challenge replacement they believe is a good idea.

“I don’t think the public will ever run out of challenge ideas,” he said. “I mean if you look at cheese challenge on its own we’ve got a whole new category of challenge related to food so expect to see more of this kind of thing.”
