Carbon monoxide leak sends 6 to hospital in Pitt Meadows

PITT MEADOWS (NEWS 1130) – Six people were rushed to hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at a plaza in Pitt Meadows.

Pitt Meadows Fire and Rescue Services were called to the Beacon Square plaza at 19126 Ford Road around 3:30 p.m. and found high levels of CO. They evacuated the building, and six adults, who were exposed, were sent to Ridge Meadows Hospital as a precaution.

FortisBC found there was a problem with the HVAC systems on the roof, and shut off the gas.

Fire Chief Mike Larsson says they didn’t find any working carbon monoxide detectors.

“Unfortunately there was none that we could see, and it was just that people weren’t feeling that well, and that’s when we came in and our alarms went off instantly as we walked in the door. There was define high levels of CO inside,” he says.

He says he would like to see detectors in all homes.

“Because carbon monoxide detectors save lives, and it’s something that doesn’t usually have an odour, and it’s a silent killer.”

He believes those who were sent to hospital will be okay.
