RCMP searching for hit-and-run suspect after fatal Ladysmith crash

LADYSMITH (NEWS 1130) — Police on southern Vancouver Island are on the hunt for the person responsible for a fatal hit-and-run near the community of Ladysmith.

Police on Vancouver Island are making some major progress as they continue to search for a driver that’s believed to have been involved in a fatal hit-and-run near Ladysmith and is believed to have fled the scene of the crash in a stolen vehicle.

No arrests have been made yet.

According to RCMP Staff Sgt Janelle Shoihet, the suspect has been identified, “and investigators are trying to locate him.”

Just after 8:30 a.m. Saturday, a Ford F150 pickup truck flew over a high median before slamming head-on into an SUV headed in the other direction.

“Unfortunately, the driver of that SUV was killed and pronounced dead at the scene,” says Shoihet.

“The driver of the F150 was able to get out and fled on foot, and is believed to have stolen another vehicle and fled the scene. Now, police have recovered the stolen vehicle.

Shoihet says no arrests have been made yet.

Initially, Mounties said evidence suggested the driver could be seriously injured, and were trying to locate them in case they needed medical attention.

“The nature of the crash was quite a hard one — believed to be high-speed, so there may be injuries that might not be apparent to him,” Shoihet explains.

The suspect hasn’t been charged yet, so they aren’t naming him. They also aren’t naming the driver killed in the crash, although officers have revealed it was a 35-year-old woman from Ladysmith.

Police want any witnesses to give them a call at 250.416-0352.
