VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A Vancouver-born NHL player is at the centre of an investigation which is looking into allegations he faked his proof of vaccine card. Evander Kane is not taking part in training camp with the San Jose Sharks.
Sportsnet 650 Host Dan Riccio says this investigation is the only situation of its kind in the league right now.
“What could happen, that’s still very much up for debate. One thing we do know is if it does turn out to be true, it doesn’t feel as though it would be grounds for the San Jose Sharks to void Evander Kane’s contract,” he said.
He says the NHL has very strict COVID-19 protocols in place.
“They’ve made the rules so strict that essentially only the most staunch of anti-vax players are the ones that are not yet vaccinated. As far as we know, it’s only a handful around the league. They are at about 99 per cent vaccination amongst its players. The league is very clear on this. They don’t want to have any COVID situations pop up.”

If a team is found to be defying the rules, there are several possible consequences.
“They could lose draft picks, they could be fined heavily, suspensions could be levied to specific players,” Riccio explained. “If this is in fact to be true, then Evander Kane is going to face some serious punishment.”
It’s illegal in both Canada and the U.S. to fake vaccine cards. In the states, they can result in thousands of dollars in fines or even prison time.
