A 27-year-old man is in custody after an apparently random stabbing in Downtown Vancouver over the weekend.

On Monday, the police released security footage of the horrific incident that happened early Saturday morning at a Tim Hortons in the Harbour Centre.

In the video, two men appear to exchange words inside the restaurant. The victim was standing near the door, putting on a jacket when a man ran up from behind and repeatedly stabbed him before running out of the store.

Police say the victim, a 25-year-old tourist, is recovering from serious and life-threatening injuries.

Officers say after a “dynamic three-day investigation,” 27-year-old David Richard Morin was taken into custody near Granville and Helmcken streets shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

“A number of people came forward with information after seeing the video, and thanks to help from the public, investigators identified a suspect,” Sgt. Steve Addison said.

Morin appeared in court Wednesday morning and has been charged with one count of aggravated assault.
