ICBC won’t bill cyclist hit by vehicle in July

ICBC is changing its policy on charging cyclists and pedestrians who are severely injured or killed in a crash. As Kier Junos reports, this comes after a Vancouver cyclist fought hefty bills from ICBC when he was hit by a car last summer, leaving him seriously hurt.

ICBC has backtracked after the auto insurer billed a cyclist $3,700 for damages to a vehicle that hit him in a Vancouver intersection.

It says it will no longer seek to recover costs from cyclists or pedestrians in collisions in which they suffer serious injuries or die, or when liability is set at 50-50 because it can’t determine what happened.

The public auto insurer says it’s listened to cycling advocates who expressed concern after Ben Bolliger was found to be half responsible for a collision last July — even though he said the vehicle ran a red light.

ICBC says it is now holding the driver 100 per cent responsible after receiving new information from police. In addition to being off the hook for costs, Bollinger will be compensated for damage to his bicycle.
