Save Old Growth protest affecting Lions Gate Bridge cleared

It was a slow-go for anyone wanting to take the Lions Gate Bridge Tuesday morning, though a protest along the Stanley Park Causeway has since been cleared.

The short-lived demonstration by Save Old Growth created delays for motorists heading to and from the crossing in both directions.

Vancouver police say they received reports just after 7:30 a.m. that protesters were attempting to block the causeway “by dropping a car in the middle of the roadway.”

“When officers arrived, the protesters ran off. The vehicle has been towed and the road is clear,” the VPD added in an email to CityNews.

The protest came just more than a month after the group said it would be scaling back its disruptions on local roads. In late June, Save Old Growth announced on social media that it would “de-escalate disruptive actions on critical transportation infrastructure.” It noted it would be “turning its attention to other tactics,” citing public outreach and events as those options.

“Major traffic disruptions will end today,” said the Save Old Growth Central Organizing Committee on June 29. “Other strategies will be used that won’t stop traffic.”

The group added that it was still urging the provincial government to permanently end the logging of old-growth forests in B.C.

Slight backups remain both in Downtown Vancouver and the North Shore.
