North Shore Rescue called to Powell River after campers eat poisonous mushrooms

North Shore Rescue crews were kept busy over the weekend, with one call taking them to the Sunshine Coast to help two people who had eaten something they shouldn’t have.

On Sunday, just after 5 a.m., NSR says it was called out to Powell River where two campers had “accidentally eaten poisonous mushrooms” and required help.

The two hikers reportedly thought what they were eating was regular fungi, with NSR saying the campers added the mushrooms to their dinner.

“Powell River SAR was on scene and requested a hoist extraction for the subjects,” NSR wrote in a Facebook post Sunday.

The group notes the two people were hoisted out and handed over to paramedics, adding both campers are “recovering well.”

With warm fall temperatures prompting many to head into the great outdoors, there was no shortage of people on local trails.

Later Sunday, NSR volunteers were once again called out, this time to help District of North Vancouver Fire crews after a hiker broke their leg on the BCMC.

That person was also rescued and taken for treatment by paramedics after they were administered first aid by fire members
