Man injured in New Westminster SkyTrain stabbing

A man suffered significant injuries after he was stabbed on a SkyTrain Wednesday evening, according to police.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) says around 7 p.m., Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers asked for assistance as they responded to reports of a stabbing inside a train car. The SkyTrain was then held at Columbia Station.

When police arrived, they secured the scene and found a man with “injuries consistent with an edged weapon.” The man was taken to the hospital where police say he was treated for injuries to his hand that were “significant, but not life-threatening.”

Shortly after police secured the scene, officers found someone nearby who matched the suspect’s description, arresting him on 4th Street. Officers also found a knife inside the Columbia station.

Investigators believe that the victim and suspect knew one another.

Sgt. Justine Thom says the incident likely happened while a lot of people were commuting on the SkyTrain.

“This incident is absolutely terrifying for those who would be on the SkyTrain at that time,” she told CityNews.

“It is a very busy time of day, it’s busy on transit. We are very much so appreciative of the individuals on the SkyTrain that did as they should have done, which is call 911.”

Police are recommending charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. The suspect is being held in custody until their court date.

NWPD is asking anyone who witnessed the incident and has yet to speak to police to call them at 604-525-5411.
