Teen identified as Burnaby shooting victim: IHIT

A 17-year-old boy has been identified by homicide investigators as the victim of a shooting in Burnaby on Thursday.

The Burnaby RCMP says officers were called just before 11 a.m. to the area of Mulberry Place and 16th Avenue.

The case was handed over to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT), which on Friday revealed the teen lived in the complex where the shooting took place.

Investigators say it appears the boy was shot around 9 a.m. on Thursday morning, adding a white Nissan Rogue was found set on fire near 173 Street and 101 Avenue in Surrey a short time later.

“IHIT will be in both areas throughout the day speaking with neighbours and canvassing for video,” Sgt. Timothy Pierotti said. “If you have information and have yet to speak to police regarding this investigation, please contact IHIT immediately. If you were in either area between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. and have dash-camera video, please contact IHIT immediately.”

Investigators say early evidence suggests the incident was targeted and they are looking to see if it is connected to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.

IHIT is asking anyone with information or anyone with dash-camera video who was in the area of Mulberry Place in Burnaby, or near 173 Street and 101 Avenue in Surrey on Thursday morning to contact its information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
