Arrest made in stabbing death outside Surrey high school

An 18-year-old has been killed after a stabbing in a Surrey school parking lot. The RCMP says officers were called to the school along 66 Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. When they arrived, the teen was found seriously hurt.

Homicide investigators say an arrest has been made in connection with the fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old outside a high school in Surrey last year.

It happened on Nov. 22, 2022, outside Tamanawis Secondary. At the time, Arshpreet Sethi — victim Mehakpreet Sethi’s sister — told OMNI News her brother was picking up their younger sibling from school to go shopping when another teen approached and stabbed him.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says Mehakpreet was found with life-threatening injuries at the scene.

“Despite the best efforts of responding officers, the victim sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter,” IHIT adds.

At the time, a 17-year-old was taken into custody.

IHIT says on June 14, 2023, police arrested “a suspect in relation to the murder of Mr. Sethi.” It’s unclear whether both people arrested are the same.

IHIT has provided few other details. It is asking for any witnesses who have yet to speak to investigators to come forward.

“Now is the time to do the right thing,” said Sgt. Timothy Pierotti. “If you or one of your loved ones have information about this tragedy, and you have yet to speak to the police, contact IHIT or the Surrey RCMP immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT Information Line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
