A new driver in North Vancouver has been given multiple tickets after police pulled them over after travelling more than twice the speed limit last week.
The North Vancouver RCMP says on Friday evening, a learner “L” level driver was stopped after being clocked going 199 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone. Police say the driver was racing on the Upper Levels highway near Lonsdale Avenue with another vehicle when they were stopped.

“The 19-year-old’s response when he was pulled over: ‘The other driver was going faster,'” the RCMP said in a release.
Mounties added the new driver was not accompanied by a supervisor and was carrying too many passengers. The other vehicle in question was not stopped.
Police say the North Vancouver man was issued tickets for excessive speed, driving without due care, and driving contrary to restrictions. The fines associated with the tickets add up to nearly $1,500. The driver’s vehicle was also impounded for seven days.
“Speed remains as the number one cause of death on our roadways,” said Const. Mansoor Sahak. “When it comes to speeding and dangerous driving, every death is a preventable death.”
Sahak tells CityNews it’s not uncommon for police to see newer drivers reach high speeds.
“Two weeks ago, we had two ‘N’ drivers travelling 180 km/h up the cut. So we’re seeing these types of speeds, they’re quite dangerous, and we’re trying to raise awareness to let the public know that these speeds can kill people,” he said.
