No injuries reported after small fire in a Vancouver elementary school portable

Parents, students, and teachers can all breathe a sigh of relief after a small fire was quickly put out at an elementary school Friday morning.

Vancouver Fire Rescue public information officer Matt Trudeau says the flames broke out inside a portable at Quilchena Elementary just before 9 a.m.

“We found a small fire in a furnace room, and we got…on it pretty quickly, containing it to the area that appears was operating as a music room,” Trudeau said. “There was no one in the portable.”

No injuries were reported, and investigators are calling it accidental.

“This wasn’t a set fire; there’s no suspicion around it,” Trudeau said. “It seems like it was just a mechanical error, and we are looking over the details of what caused that mechanical error.”

The school remained open, with students attending classes as scheduled.
