Olympic spirit is alive at the Richmond Oval

An interactive Olympic experience in Richmond is offering free community days starting Aug. 1, giving visitors the chance to test their athletic abilities in a variety of sport simulations.
The Richmond Olympic Experience is set up at the Richmond Olympic Oval, which was originally built to host speedskating for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
The exhibit is Canada’s first interactive Olympic Museum and showcases Canada’s sports history through a variety of sports simulators and exhibits.
“We’re trying to celebrate the Olympic story, and at the same time, the Olympic history,” said Lester De Guzman, program manager for the City of Richmond.
Guzman says they wanted to create an exhibit that celebrates the history of the Olympic games.
The interactive experience gives visitors the opportunity to learn about Canadian Olympians through historical treasures and digital archives. It takes guests through some of the most memorable moments in sports, detailing how advances in technology have pushed the games forward.
Visitors can take part in interactive challenges like shotput, sport climbing, basketball, and bobsledding.
The museum is free on the first Thursday of each month starting Aug. 1.
The community day is part of a series of initiatives to allow more community members to visit the Oval.
