Mounties injured, man arrested and sent to hospital after botched break-in: Burnaby RCMP

Police say a man is in custody after an apparent break-in attempt in Burnaby on Monday evening.
The Burnaby RCMP says police were called after a “disturbance at a residence” around 6:15 p.m. near Humphreys Avenue near 17 Avenue.
Corp. Michael Kalanj says the suspect was allegedly trying to break into one of the homes in the area.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was “yelling incoherently and was quite aggressive,” he said.
“When officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he became assaultive towards police,” Kalanj said.
Footage posted to social media of the incident showed a massive police presence at a home with a focus on a garage.
Armando, who lives across the street, tells 1130 NewsRadio that he initially saw police lights through his curtains and didn’t think anything of it.
“But then I noticed through the window that they were moving, so I looked out the window, and all of a sudden I just saw more cops coming, and then there was a guy in the garage screaming his head off. Cops had him down,” Armando explained.
“I did see one cop holding his hand like he had been bitten, or something,” he added.
A Taser was used on the suspect, Kalanj explains, and the suspect was taken to hospital. Speaking to 1130 News Radio Tuesday morning, Kalanj says the suspect was released from hospital and remains in custody.
Kalanj says several police officers also sustained minor injuries during the incident, with two officers taken to hospital.
According to Kalanj, 15 police vehicles, including New Westminster and Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers, responded to the initial calls for backup after reports of officers being injured.
Kalanj says there is no threat to the public, and the investigation is ongoing.
