“Despite lifesaving efforts, a male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Cpl. James Grandy said in a statement.

Grandy adds that the driver of the vehicle was “unable” to avoid hitting the victim.

“[The driver] remained on scene. No criminality is suspected,” Mounties said.

The highway was closed for several hours while police investigated; however, it reopened to traffic in all directions just after 11:30 a.m.

The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP are actively investigating the incident. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
