Pedestrian struck, killed along Coquihalla Highway south of Merritt

The Merritt RCMP says a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle along the Coquihalla Highway 5 early Thursday morning.
According to Mounties, emergency crews were called to the incident around 5:15 a.m., near Kane Valley Road, south of Merritt.
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN TO 1130 NEWSRADIO VANCOUVER LIVE!“Despite lifesaving efforts, a male pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Cpl. James Grandy said in a statement.
Grandy adds that the driver of the vehicle was “unable” to avoid hitting the victim.
“[The driver] remained on scene. No criminality is suspected,” Mounties said.
The highway was closed for several hours while police investigated; however, it reopened to traffic in all directions just after 11:30 a.m.
The BC Coroners Service and the RCMP are actively investigating the incident. Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262.
