Vancouver police announced a bit of positive news Thursday as they provided an update on the investigation into Saturday’s Lapu-Lapu Day festival vehicle-ramming attack.
One of the surviving victims in hospital has been upgraded from being in ‘critical’ condition to ‘serious’ condition.
While there are still 13 people in hospital — four of them in critical condition and two now in serious — VPD Sgt. Steve Addison says it’s an update that should give the city hope as it grapples with the aftermath of the attack that killed 11 people.
Meanwhile, police restated a request for anyone with firsthand video of the incident to send it in directly. For anyone who witnessed the event in person and has already done so, police are urging you to get in touch.
“Please don’t just assume that, because there were a lot of people there and a lot of witnesses have already come forward, that your information is not important. It is,” said Addison.
“The Vancouver Police Homicide Tip Line is 604-717-2500. Please give that number a phone call to speak to an investigator. If you’re not ready to make a phone call, consider dropping by the community support centre that we have set up, where we have VPD officers.”
No update was provided Thursday on the suspect, 30-year-old Kai Ji Adam Lo, though police have said additional charges could be coming.
Currently, Lo is charged with eight counts of second-degree murder, and documents indicate he’ll appear in court tomorrow.
Addison confirmed Lo did have a valid driver’s licence.
On Wednesday, B.C. Premier David Eby declared that Friday, May 2 will be an official day of remembrance and mourning for the victims.
Eby also said his government will start a review of the province’s Mental Health Act.
Addison says Thursday marks the last of the department’s daily updates on the investigation.
“If there’s a significant development in this investigation, or if there’s information that we feel the need to call you in for, we’ll certainly do that.”
