The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) has been called in after a fatal incident in Sechelt early Saturday morning.
The Sunshine coast RCMP says it was called after a report that a man had left a home on Oldmill Lane near Delta Road, in distress and carrying an edged weapon just after 3:30 a.m.
“Sunshine Coast RCMP arrived on scene and located the man nearby,” said Sgt. Vanessa Munn.
“Upon making contact, the man fled back into a residence and was pursued by officers. There were other people, including children, inside the house. Police maintained contact with the man who was allegedly holding an edged weapon as they worked to de-escalate the situation.”
Just after 10:30 a.m., an “interaction” occurred inside the home, and shots were fired by police.
BC Emergency Health Services (BC EHS) was called in to provide medical care to the man.
No other injuries were reported.
The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
Editor’s note: A previous version of this article wrongly attributed several statements to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO). In fact, the information above came from the BC RCMP.
The IIO has also clarified that the victim did not die at the scene, but rather was transported to hospital and later pronounced dead.
