12-year-old Tumbler Ridge shooting victim to undergo surgery

Maya Gebala, the 12-year-old Tumbler Ridge shooting victim who has been fighting for her life at BC Children’s Hospital, will undergo surgery this weekend.

In a post to social media, Cia Edmonds, Maya’s mother, says Saturday’s surgery will be her fourth since she suffered gunshots in the head and neck.

“She is finally getting a prosthetic piece of her skull put in place,” Edmonds explained, adding that Maya’s skull had been fractured by a bullet.

She described Maya’s recovery process as a “rollercoaster of setbacks, infections, surgeries.”

Edmonds says her daughter has a new brain infection, can’t speak, and still shows no movement on her right side.

Calling it “another hill to climb,” Edmonds says Maya is her way out of the ICU.

“Her hand movements right now are deliberately grabbing the areas that hurt; her good leg is kicking herself into position. Her neck is moving, she’s turning her head (that’s new). Her lips are mouthing (ow),” said Edmonds.

Maya was shot three times and suffered severe brain injuries in the Feb. 10 mass shooting that left eight victims dead in the remote B.C. community.
