‘Electrical non-compliances’ found at Cultus Lake Waterpark, says Technical Safety BC after incident

Twelve students from Minnekhada Middle School were taken to the hospital after an "electrical" incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark. As investigators work to determine what happened, parents are demanding answers. Joe Sadowski reports.

Technical Safety BC (TSBC) says preliminary findings in an investigation into an incident at Cultus Lake Waterpark point to “electrical non-compliances” at the site.

In a statement Wednesday, TSBC — a self-funded independent body that oversees the safety of technical systems and equipment across the province — said it will work with the park to support its return to operation.

“In order for the park to reopen, we will need to conduct further investigation, and the park owner will need to correct all hazards,” it said.

“As a result, the waterpark remains closed with no timeline for reopening.”

On Monday, a dozen students suffered electrical burn injuries at the park after the incident, TSBC says. All of those students were taken to hospital, with two of them being transported by air ambulance.

Chilliwack RCMP Const. Bradley Holditch says all children who were transported to the hospital are “doing well.”

He adds that the children’s ages are between 12 and 13.

Cultus Lake Waterpark said in a written statement that it is fully cooperating with Technical Safety BC.

“Our immediate closure will continue to be extended and ongoing as needed to adequately complete all thorough reviews.”

It says he incident occurred at the bottom of the 0 to 60 waterslide.
