VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Your weekend plans could soon involve going to Empire Field in Vancouver, and not just to watch sports.
Vancouver City Council is expected to approve the plan Wednesday for a destination park, sport and recreation facility at the southeast corner of Hastings Park.
The project is expected to cost $2.1 million more that originally planned but Councillor Raymond Louie says it means the project can be fast-tracked.
“For the money that is described overall, this is what you get as a result of that. So the advancements in this piece of work I think is a positive thing for the community and the city overall,” explains Louie.
The project is expected to be open for the public by fall of 2014 and will now boast a price tag of $10.5 million.
The park will include:
Two synthetic turf fields with warm up area and bleachers for 400 people
A rubberized running track
Urban obstacle course
Fitness equipment
Sand volleyball courts
Street soccer
Ball hockey
Basketball court
BMX dirt jump area
Improved access to Leeside skateboard tunnel
3.25 kilometres of new bike and running paths.
