VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The city of Seattle is bringing back the dreaded wheel-locking device to increase revenue. North of the border, Simon Fraser University still uses the “boot” on vehicles with unpaid parking tickets, so why doesn’t Vancouver do the same?
Back in the 1970s, Vancouver city council passed a bylaw banning the boot because some property owners were apparently unscrupulously using the device to hold a person’s vehicle hostage.
The city’s Wendy Stewart tells us they have no plans to bring it back. “There’s a concern that if a vehicle is booted in a lane or thoroughfare, it can obstruct traffic and cause a bit of a hazard. So, there is no boot permitted in the city of Vancouver.”
The city of Seattle sees the boot as a good source of revenue and will start using the wheel-locking device next year. That city’s council hopes it will bring in some extra revenue.
