Vancouver women bare it all on Go Topless Day

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It’s the third time that Vancouverites are baring it all and taking part in International Go Topless Day.

But even though it’s legal, it’s still not accepted everywhere.

Organizer Denise Belisle says the day aims to level the gender playing field.

“In Vancouver it is legal to be topless,” she says.

“When we walk topless, people say ‘oh can I take your picture’ and they stare. It’s still not accepted just because there’s not enough of it.”

Belisle says the rest of the world is generally more accepting of topless women in public and that most people, once exposed to it, become accepting.

She points to clothing-optional Wreck Beach as an example of progressive thinking in the city.

“So it’s mostly good and there’s also the more prude people that say it’s too sexual but I think it’s just because they don’t see enough of it.”

The day included a march down Robson Street.

It’s the sixth go around for the day internationally and participation has grown from 10 cities in its initial year to 45 this year.
