VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Even people in Newfoundland/Labrador are riveted to their TVs during the Olympics, four-and-a-half time zones away.
It seems to confirm what a new Harris-Decima poll has found. The survey says 77 per cent of Canadians believe the Olympics are doing a lot to unite the country.
Brendan McCarthy says it’s true.
He works at The Telegram, a St. John’s, Newfoundland newspaper, and says people there are choosing to forfeit sleep to catch the events on TV.
“I know for the opening ceremonies, they extended into 2 a.m. Newfoundland time and they watched it live,” says McCarthy.
He says like here, people are not only chatting about the results, but the side stories that are generated by the Games.
The Olympic spirit is high, considering not a single athlete is from that province.
