VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Police asked all downtown liquor stores to close their doors at 2 p.m., today. They say the gold medal hockey game will draw the biggest crowds into the core.
Police handed out 200 violation tickets on Friday, and asked 1,800 people to pour out open booze.
John Teti of Bar Watch Vancouver says he thought the amount of open liquor on the streets last weekend was staggering. He agrees with the VPD’s request. “You need to take these measures to make sure people have a good time but have a good time sensibly.”
“You get a bunch of young people and an over-consumption of alcohol, and you have a problem, and that’s what we’re trying to make sure doesn’t happen,” Teti added.
Even though liquor stores closed early last weekend, there were nearly 2,000 liquor pour-outs and 200 drinking tickets issued. Police will be working with members of the Integrated Security Unit.
