Lunar eclipse coincides with winter solstice

By

TORONTO, Ont. – It was a once-in-a-lifetime event, unless you plan on living until 2092.

A rare total lunar eclipse on the same day as the winter solstice occurred early Tuesday morning.

The moon took on a deep red hue for over two hours beginning about 1:30 a.m.

The next total lunar eclipse to be visible in Canada will occur on Dec. 10, 2011.

There can be as many as five lunar eclipses a year in Canada.

The eclipse coincided with the winter solstice for the first time in 400 years. The last time this happened was in 1554.

Winter officially arrives at 6:38 p.m.
