BC’s top Mountie: Pickton case didn’t get due attention

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A top Mountie has admitted the RCMP made mistakes in the Robert Pickton serial murder investigation.

Vancouver police have released several emails between Deputy Chief Doug LePard and RCMP Deputy Commissioner Gary Bass.

In one of them, Bass replies to LePard saying, “Your in-depth analysis certainly shows that this did not get the attention it should have.”

Bass also acknowledges neither the RCMP nor the Vancouver Police “looked closely enough at what people in other agencies were saying.”

The Deputy Commissioner was responding to a request from LePard asking the Mounties to acknowledge key findings of a Vancouver Police report on the Pickton investigation that was released last year.

The 400-page report released last August admitted the VPD made several mistakes and also pointed to errors by RCMP investigators.

The emails were posted on the VPD’s Freedom of Information web page two days ago. The Mounties have not yet released their own report on the investigation.

The Mounties are not commenting on Bass’s statement. They say it’s out of respect for the upcoming Pickton inquiry.
