VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Look out Mom and Pop shops. The war between Walmart and Target for retail supremacy in Canada could result in a lot of collateral damage for smaller retailers.
Walmart isn’t taking news Target is coming to Canada by 2013 lightly. The retailer is spending $500 million on 40 building projects, and hopes to have half of its 333 Canadian outlets selling groceries by the end of the year.
Mike is among those who worry for smaller businesses, but seems resigned to the fact that many are getting caught in the crossfire. “It’s just how businesses works, I guess. It sucks, but that’s pretty much what’s going to happen. I don’t think it could really be stopped.”
Analysts say Walmart is merely protecting one of its most valuable territories. After the US, Mexico, and the UK, Canada is its most valuable market.
