VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Tributes poured in for former US President Ronald Reagan on what would have been his 100th birthday. A crowd gathered at Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, to mark the occasion.
The former US President casts a long shadow on American politics to this day, as current politicians like Sarah Palin claim to follow in his footsteps.
But Kwantlen University History instructor Bob Fuhr points out while Reagan talked about cutting spending, he never actually did it. “It’s safe to say that in the eight years Reagan was President, he never once submitted a balanced budget to the United States Congress. Reagan had huge military expenditures during his time in office, so he always talked about small government, but never really followed through on it.”
Reagan was 93 when he died in June, 2004 after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
