Groups representing cabbies demand tougher penalties for driver attacks

TORONTO, Ont. – Groups representing cab drivers are calling for tougher penalties for those who commit crimes against cabbies, following a vicious attack on a driver in North York.

Toronto cabbie Khalil Talke remains in Sunnybrook Hospital, recovering from multiple stab wounds he suffered during an attack in the Yonge and Sheppard area Monday night.

Taxiworkers and the Ontario Taxi Workers Associated said tougher penalties for violent crimes against drivers and a closer working relationship with city police are needed, noting that StatsCan lists taxi driving as one of the most dangerous professions.

They said drivers are extremely vulnerable because they work alone, carry money and are exposed to the public.

The associations are urging all taxi drivers to remain vigilant and not take any customers if they feel their safety may be compromised.
