Vancouver ditches title of a “No Fun City”

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It might be time to retire the old ‘No Fun City’ label.  Between the 2010 Olympics and this great playoff run by the Vancouver Canucks, the city’s reputation has changed.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says Vancouver has proved that dubious title no longer rings true.  “I think we ditched the ‘No Fun’ label years ago, certainly with the Olympics.  What we’re seeing now puts us at the top of the list of fun cities.”

He says people here really know how to have fun at a world class level.  “North America has never seen celebrations like this for a big playoff run and we’re really defining that,” says Robertson.

The Mayor compares Canucks crowds to those seen in Europe or South America celebrating a soccer championship.

Premier weighs in on Canucks

Premier Christy Clark is pledging cash for a Stanley Cup parade should the Canucks win but she says the City of Vancouver has to pay for its own policing costs.

And those costs are ballooning thanks to the success of the downtown live sites.

Clark hasn’t said exactly how much she’ll pitch in for a parade.  “We haven’t gotten to that stage yet, but we’re working on that.  I mean, again, we’re crossing our fingers and hoping that there will be a reason to spend a little bit of money on that.”

And for fans that are superstitious, don’t worry about the Olympic cauldron being fired up for Game 6.  “Look, I don’t believe in luck, but just in case, we turned it on the last two times they were away.  They didn’t win, so we’re not turning it on tonight, just so you know.”
