Want to eat a wolf eel?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As fish supplies in our oceans dwindle, scientists are looking to put other “creatures of the deep” on our menu.

How would you like to eat a wolf eel?

If you Google an image of one of these guys, it may very well kill your appetite. But Michele Patterson with the Aquatic Foods Initiative at Vancouver Island University says it is a possibility to use this creature as an alternative food item.

“The idea is to look at another species in order to protect a species that is not doing very well,” she explains.

“Can we have both a healthy, sustainable marine and coastal ecosystem and a thriving seafood sector, that together benefit BC’s coastal communities? When we have fishing, we have environmental problems… but what we want to explore is how we can have both of those things at the same time,” she adds.

So, does it taste like chicken? Some actually compare it to a wild trout; firm, yet delicious. But it’s apparently difficult to filet.
