VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People used to do speed to lose weight but now they’re using ecstasy. Today kicks off National Eating Disorders Awareness Week.
Dr. Blake Woodside has been treating eating disorder patients for decades and he’s really concerned with the growing use of ecstasy, calling it extreme.
“The difficulty with these substances is most stimulants also kind of annoy the heart, they tend to make the heart a bit twitchy and make the heart prone to having abnormal heart rhythms which can be fatal.”
He adds in a few years another deadly substance will likely begin trending. “Early in my career it used to be things like amphetamines, speed, but any stimulant will suppress appetite and then people will lose weight.”
Woodside warns society needs to change the way it perceives a normal body image in order to change the view of today’s youth.
In December, an Abbotsford teen died after overdosing on the drug to help control her weight. Several deaths have been linked to ecstasy in BC since last August.
