New system to determine council pay increases in Langley

By

LANGLEY (NEWS1130) – The system that determines pay increases for the mayor and councillors in Langley Township  is under review.

Currently, the pay rates are reviewed every three years, and adjusted according to pay rates in six neighbouring municipalities. Last December, the mayor and councillors got a 19 per cent pay hike, angering voters.

Councillor Kim Richter says the constant spiral upwards was getting out of hand.

“Because the system of just looking at the Lower Mainland means we are indexing each other, and that’s what’s causing this perpetual increase of such significant degrees.”

Richter admits December’s increase was hard for voters to swallow. “A lot of people are struggling to keep jobs. They’re struggling to pay their taxes. It just is not fair to them.”

A task force has been struck to look another way to determine pay rates. Councillors expect to hear its recommendations by December.

Council hopes to have another system in place by the time the next council is voted in.
