Lions lock up Lulay for 2012 season

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – The BC Lions have signed a new contract with quarterback Travis Lulay for the 2012 season, with an option for 2013. However, the deal may be a lead-in to a longer one next spring.

Lulay is fresh off of his first full year as the Lions’ starting QB. After a sluggish 1-6 start, he kicked into another gear, leading his team to top spot in the West Division and a Grey Cup title. Individually, Lulay was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player as well as the MVP of the Grey Cup game.

The club did not release terms of the deal.

The Lions would have liked to have locked up Lulay to a longer deal, but with salary cap concerns they were unable to do so. General Manager Wally Buono says the discussions for this contract may help during discussions next spring.

“The time that was spent was good, not just for today but also for the future. I think it lays the groundwork for things ahead, but it resolves what’s most important, which is 2012.”

Lulay says he just wanted to get the negotiations done with so they could begin looking towards the upcoming season.

“The terms weren’t as important as getting the contract done, from my side,” he says. “This is something everybody was comfortable with. I was super excited, Wally was, and the organization.”

With Lulay’s deal only being for one season there are likely to be several questions about whether he will test the waters in the NFL next year.

Lulay was originally signed by BC as a free agent in 2009.
