News1130’s weekend sports round-up

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There’s plenty of action for the local sports fan this weekend.

CFL

The BC Lions are back in action on Monday at 2 p.m. when they visit Toronto’s Rogers Centre for their first meeting of the season with the surprising Argonauts. Toronto (3-2) shares first place in the CFL Eastern Conference and is already halfway to their win total of last season when they went 6-12 and finished out of the CFL playoffs.

Toronto’s turnaround has a lot to do with the play of quarterback Ricky Ray who came over to the Argos in a trade with Edmonton in the offseason. Ray has been spectacular and last week led the Argonauts to a 23-20 upset of the Montreal Alouettes.

The Lions (3-2) would like to come out of Toronto with a victory and head into the bye-week on a positive note. BC is coming off a superb defensive effort in a 34-8 victory over Calgary last weekend. Quarterback Travis Lulay leads a Lions offence that is suddenly spreading the passing around.  Nine different Lions caught passes in last week’s game at McMahon Stadium.

Lulay and the Lions will face an Argos defence that that ranks second in the CFL against the pass and third against the run.  The game is also a homecoming for a couple of Lions.  Defensive back Byron Parker and Arland Bruce who once played for Toronto. Bruce won a Grey Cup with Toronto.

TENNIS

The Odlum Brown Vancouver Open tennis tournament wraps up this weekend at the Hollyburn Country Club in West Vancouver. Today’s action includes Canadians Frank Dancevic in Singles and Philip Bester in doubles play.

HORSERACING

It’s a busy weekend of horseracing at Hastings Racecourse. There is no Friday night racing but a full card is set for Saturday Sunday and Monday.  Post time Saturday is 1:50 p.m.

News1130 Sports Rail Bird lists his best bet Saturday as Arkhill in the 5th race. Rail Bird’s longshot is Monahee in the 7th.
