BURNABY (NEWS1130) – It seems to be a growing problem on the Lower Mainland, thieves driving through malls to steal jewellery or ATM’s. The latest target were two jewellery stores in Metrotown early this morning.
Suspects driving a stolen red Jeep drove through and took some jewellery from Michael Hill and Lugaro Jewellers, causing a lot of damage to both stores.
Michael Hill was also targeted when the same thing happened at Lougheed Mall recently. Similar incidents also took place in Coquitlam and Langley.
RCMP Staff Sergeant Dave Eidet has a suggestion on how malls can protect themselves. “Cement pillars installed in front of entrances to the malls and spaced evenly apart prevent a vehicle from driving through because it usually damages the vehicle to the point it can’t be driven.”
He adds reinforcing doors and clear surveillance footage are also key.
Eidet explains their concern is if someone decides to do this during mall hours. “People should be diligent. If they see something suspicious then by all means call the police. I much rather come to something that turns out to be a minor event as opposed to a major event.”
If you do anything about these incidents call Burnaby RCMP at 604.294.7922 or Crimestoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS.
