VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – If the deal on The Brick website seemed too good to be true, that’s because it was.
The company says it will not be honouring the 50 per cent discount that online shoppers thought they were getting.
In a posting on its Facebook page, the widely known furniture and appliance chain says a technical glitch mistakenly gave customers an unintended discount on Christmas Eve and Christmas day.
Marketing expert Lindsay Meredith says if that’s the case, there’s not much a customer can do.
“If it turns out there is a reasonable argument that the vendor made a mistake in its pricing, there is a recovery position for the vendor, the vendor is covered legally,” he points out.
It’s a story that may make many consumers angry, but as the saying goes, there is no such thing as bad press.
“There is a flip side to this story. If you have a so-called glitch, when you announce your glitch, you get an awful lot of news coverage and you don’t pay a penny for it,” Meredith notes.
The company is offering customers a credit equal to 10 per cent of the affected online price that can be put toward a future purchase.
Online technical glitches happen from time to time, and some companies opt to honour the mistaken prices. For example, incorrect prices for Delta Airlines fares that were posted for two hours this past week were a tenth of regular prices.
Delta says it will honour those fares.
