Vancouver vs Surrey: A tale of two very different cities

By

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – It seems 30 km can make a very big difference in priorities; a new poll finds stark contrasts between the issues people in Surrey and Vancouver find important.

Perhaps not so surprisingly, housing topped the list for Vancouverites. Four in ten say that’s the most important issue.

“Those between the ages of 18 and 34 — those leaving home or finding their way into their first mortgage — they are the ones who are particularly troubled by the fact that it’s difficult to get into the market,” explains Mario Canseco with pollster Insights West.

But housing seems to be the least of concerns for folks in Surrey.

When it comes to crime, that topic barely made Vancouver’s list at just three per cent, compared to Surrey’s whopping 51 per cent.

“Crime usually registers around 17 or 20 per cent in every municipal survey that I’ve conducted and to have it at 51 per cent is certainly something that I’ve never seen before,” explains Canseco.

One thing both cities are both concerned about is transportation; just under one in five people asked in both cities say that’s a big priority in their area.
