Mi Casa, su Casa! Vancouver’s Casa Mia featured in Heritage House Tour

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Architecture, design, and history: There is something for everyone in Vancouver’s Heritage House Tour tomorrow.

Eleven homes are on the self-guided tour, including “Casa Mia” on Marine Drive.

Vancouver Heritage Foundation Executive Director Judith Mosley says the estate is a reflection of its original owner, a local brewery baron. “George C. Reifel also built and owned the Commodore Ballroom and other theatres in Vancouver and so Casa Mia had also its own ballroom built in the basement.”

Built in 1932, “Casa Mia” features a basement ballroom with a spring-loaded dancefloor, much like the Commodore Ballroom, which Reifel also once owned. Legend has it that acts that played the Commodore would come to the mansion afterwards.

“It has quite a reputation as something of a party house, particularly in the 1940s, and retains a lot of the original features and decor of that time,” says Mosley.

The other 10 homes are spread out throughout the city, from Hastings-Sunrise to Kerrisdale. The self-guided tour is now in its 12th year.
