Vancouver Catholic schools implement policy for transgender students

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – As a result of a human rights complaint, Vancouver Catholic schools are making accommodations for transgender students.

Doug Lausen with Catholic Independent Schools says now students will be able to make uniform choices and use private bathrooms if they want.

“The policy we have developed and released this morning, I believe, is a policy that strengthens the schools mission of developing the whole child spiritually, physically and intellectually,” he says.

“It keeps all Catholic teaching intact, it also allows a Catholic school to provide support to children who have gender dysphoria,” he adds.

The new policies don’t come in time for Tracey Wilson, who’s now 11.

Wilson, who left the Catholic school system while her family lodged the complaint, has decided to stay in the public system.
