Vancouver Vaisakhi Parade draws huge crowd

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you are one of the tens of thousands of people out on the streets of South Vancouver today for the annual Vaisakhi Parade, police want you to know there are no safety concerns. The VPD say their biggest worry is for drivers thanks to all the road closures in and around the Ross Street Temple.
About 100 officers, both in uniform and plain clothes are on hand to keep an eye on things. And unfortunately something that happens almost every time there’s a big event is children become separated from their parents.
“We do get missing children reported every year at Vaisakhi. It’s usually just a case of parents not being super attentive. We find [the kids] usually fairly quickly, but in the short time that they’re apart from their parents it’s obviously very upsetting for the kids and very upsetting for the parents,” says Constable Brian Montague.
“We have a very visible presence at the parade. There [are a lot of] officers around, plus we’ll have our traffic authority at traffic points throughout the parade and if anyone has any concerns they can always approach one of our officers in uniform.”
He adds they plan way ahead for an event like this.
Surrey’s Vaisakhi Parade is one week from today.
