Most people in the Lower Mainland want a regional transportation plan immediately: poll

By

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – A poll sponsored by Metro Vancouver mayors finds 90 per cent of those asked want a regional transportation plan rolled out immediately.

Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner says it’s not surprising that people want this done fast and she sees some parallels between transit and another problem seen across the Lower Mainland.

“With the higher cost of housing we are exacerbating the problem because people are moving further out into suburban areas so it’s actuall making it worse.”

Hepner says the Feds are stepping up to the plate with funding, the province is stepping up, now it’s time to get the regional leaders to get a plan together.

She doesn’t expect to see another taxation question going to the public, like last year’s plebiscite.

“Asking a taxation question of the public, we saw where that took us the last time around, so I think the expectation now is that we will buckle down, come up with some options and solve it.”
