VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An annual celebration of the region’s culinary scene is underway for the next two weeks.
Dine Out has grown to become Canada’s largest food festival with 284 restaurants participating.
Tourism Vancouver says more than 100-thousand people visit local bars and restaurants for the set menus.
Organizer Lucas Pavan says it’s come a long way since its first year.
“Fifteen years ago we had 57 restaurants that jumped on board offering three-course menus at I believe it was 15 and 25 dollars. But now we have so many more restaurants, we have a full 17-day schedule of culinary events which amounts to about 120 different experiences.”
Two long-term Vancouver staples, Bishops and Vij’s, are joining for the first time.
Pavan says restaurateur Vikram Vij changed his mind after seeing the evolution of the city’s food scene.
“He’s a very passionate man and he’s very passionate about Vancouver and the culinary industry here and so he’s wanting now to support tourism Vancouver’s initiative to put Vancouver’s best foot forward when it comes to its dining scenes.”
Diners will also have the chance to eat at the Vancouver Aquarium, take tasting tours around Granville Island and explore the growing craft beer scene along with local food.
Pavan says more than 100,000 people will visit local bars and restaurants for the set menus, with reservations still available for most spots.
