VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Potholes continue to wreak havoc on Lower Mainland roads and vehicles this winter, leaving many drivers with flat tires, busted rims and other damage.
ICBC says any damage could be covered by insurance providers if a driver has the optional collision coverage. The insurance can be purchased ICBC or any other private provider.
“That kind of insurance covers you when you hit another vehicle, an object or the surface of the road and a pothole happens to be on the surface of a road,” ICBC’s Sam Corea says.
Despite covering the cost of repairs, a driver’s premium rates could go up for claiming pothole damage.
ICBC’s Dial-a-Claim centre received 1,221 calls on Sunday, up from the 1,044 registered on the first Sunday of March last year, but lower than the other snow days this winter. ICBC does not keep records of how many of those calls were for new claims or for potholes specifically.
Corea reminds drivers to leave extra space between vehicles to see more of the road, avoid swerving into other lanes and slowing speeds to limit damage in the event you can’t avoid a pothole.
