Best tap water in BC awarded

VANCOUVER ISLAND (NEWS 1130) – The tiny village of Zeballos on Vancouver Island was awarded BC’s best tap water this week, at the BC Water & Waste Association’s annual conference in Victoria.

The town beat nine other areas to take out the title.

The panel is made up of judges from across the country. They’re known as “aqualiers,” or water sommeliers, and take into account appearance, aroma, taste, mouth feel, after-taste and overall impression.

Much of it has to do with which minerals the ground water is running through. But Carlie Hucul with the Association says that’s not all.

“As well, certain treatment methods. Chlorination has come up a lot, and sometimes when they insert chlorination to make sure it’s safe to drink when it gets to residents, there is a little bit of a residual chlorine aftertaste when it hits the tap.

Every year, the Tap Water Taste Test has attracted drinking water providers from throughout BC and the Yukon.

In 2014, the City of Kelowna won top prize, in 2015 it was the City of Chilliwack and in 2016 the District of Hope took the award home.
