No, it’s not cold enough for pond skating

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – It was around this time last year a cold snap had people skating on a number of ponds around the Lower Mainland.

“Actually, we still have open water,” says Sean Healy with the Vancouver Park Board. “We do have some areas where we’re getting ice on the perimeter, but that ice is less than a centimetre thick.”

Healy notes the ice is nowhere close to ready for pond hockey.

“Not a possibility,” he says. “In fact, even under the weight of large animals — a coyote or a dog — the ice would break. Not only should people be staying clear of the water, so should all animals. For any dog owners, please don’t let your dogs on the ice, either.”

Even with cold temperatures predicted for the rest of the week, he doesn’t foresee the ice getting thick enough to walk or skate on.
