BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Burnaby is the latest Metro Vancouver city to prohibit the sale of animals including dogs, cats and rabbits at pet stores.
The decision by city council has been welcomed by the BC SPCA’s Amy Morris.
“I’m really excited. There’s a trend happening to ensure that all pets have homes and this is another step in that trend. The store that was open has closed down and so, there’s no stores currently selling dogs and cats, and so, they’re able to put it into effect immediately.”
Morris says other municipalities which have already restricted these types of sales include Surrey, Vancouver, Richmond, New Westminster and Delta.
“It really represents public sentiment. Pets aren’t products and that they really are living beings. They deserve more than to be sold out of a store and really, that’s a trend across Metro Vancouver.”
If you’re interested in adopting a pet, Morris says you can visit an animal shelter, contact a rescue facility or visit the home of a responsible breeder, so you can see the animal’s living conditions.
